Andrew Ramroop OBE – CEO & Master Tailor of Maurice Sedwell Ltd.

Andrew Ramroop, Director and Master Tailor of Maurice Sedwell the Savile Row tailor, is amongst the world’s finest tailors. He is a true craftsman, the only practicing tailor on Savile Row with an OBE for services to tailoring and he holds a Professorship for Distinction in the Field of Tailoring from the University of the Arts London (home of the London College of Fashion of course, where he trained). He is totally self-made, one of only three bespoke tailors left on Savile Row, and the only black person to own a tailor’s store on Savile Row.

Andrew’s own story is an unusual one, coming alone to London from Trindad at 17 to train in tailoring. He knew nobody in the UK but Savile Row’s Huntsman & Sons engaged him before he studied at the London College of Fashion, completing the three year course in just two years. In 1974 he started his apprenticeship with Maurice Sedwell on Savile Row, and when Mr Sedwell sold the business Andrew was able to purchase it in 1988.

Andrew is a savvy business man. During the 90s when many other shops on Savile Row were closing due to the recession, Maurice Sedwell moved into larger premises, their current location of 19 Savile Row. He took the business from 0% export to approximately 75% export. Maurice Sedwell now has clients in 60 countries. Andrew was an Ambassador for the Business is Great Britain campaign, is a champion of SMEs and recently was named Black British Business Person of 2017 by The BBBAwards.

Andrew is passionate about training the next generation of elite tailors. In 2008 he opened the Savile Row Academy, where he now passes on his immense skill and knowledge of tailoring to young men and women eager to work on Savile Row.

Andrew is inspired by his customers, guiding them to the pinnacle of sartorial elegance through a three stage fitting process whereby the customer designs their garments through conversation in consultation with himself. Maurice Sedwell Ltd has some distinctive styles, but doesn’t make anything off the peg – every garment is handmade, fitted and cut bespoke for each customer. Andrew likes touches of individuality in his suits and of course helps people with every single detail, creating garments of only the very highest quality.
